Seems to confirm what I said. And Germany is literally discussing non-defense spending infrastructure projects that aid defense projects right now, so this isn’t much different from what those experts are saying about China.

There are generalized benefits from learning a language that will make it easier to learn other languages. But which language doesn’t really matter, and learning a dead or artificial language might have some theoretical benefits in that regard, but in practical terms you will learn less of it as there is less material to practice on and in general the motivation to learn a language you can barely use will be low for most people.

I personally think it is more worthwhile to spend learning another EU language. The general benefit of better understanding how languages work will be the same, but you end up with a practical language skill. I am a bit tired of the argument anyways, having had to learn Latin with the exact same argument and it was a complete waste of time.

Yes, but EU defense spending now is a hundred billion higher and is projected to increase by another hundred billion by 2027. That double of what China is currently spending, and AFAIK they don’t have plans to increase it by that much.

Do you not think there are some problems that arise from assymetry in ability to learn English?

Since the UK left (and Ireland and Malta being the only ones left speaking English natively I think) this problem got less problematic. If it is a foreign language almost for all, the differences are not that big.

Artificial languages have the problem that they will end up being spoken only by an elite, which would be highly problematic for the EU, which is already seen as an elite project by all too many people in the EU.

Now add all the EU defense spending together. But yes, China is trying to catch up, which isn’t great either.

Those French overseas colonies would probably benefit from more independence, yes, but if you have an actual military base there or an ally that wants you to be there, you don’t need navy ships capable of operational multi-month independence either. That is really only needed if operating in hostile territory far away from home, and IMHO we don’t need that.

The EU defense spending is already massive, easily outclassing everyone but the US.

The problem is on what the money is spend on, as much is wasted to national white elephants or transferred to unreliable US defense companies.

And in general way too much is spend on global force projection tech. There is for example no need for the EU to have a navy fleet that can operate independently for many months in the Pacific.

This is a terrible distribution and the semi-centralisation and gatekeeping by the established actors is one of the reason email is dying.

I think one reason has to do with digital sovereignty. Especially people in Europe are not happy with the dominance of US based social media sites and thus are more likely to invest time and effort into local alternatives. They are also more likely to be concerned about the near total lack of legal privacy protections in the US.
