I think addiction is a key aspect. Like with gambling there is of course that aspect of responsibility, but regulation to minimize harm is also important.
All the major social media apps being designed to exploit that dopamine response is kind of like junk foods being the most common due to being subsidized; of course people just shouldn’t eat junk food, but we should make healthy options the most prevalent and common instead.
Of course that would require a government that would actually force corporations to implement harm reductive measures, instead of one bought by and working for corporations…
FOSS alternatives like Lemmy, Pixelfed, and Loops should be much healthier due to no algorithm working to maximize engagement. I also think social isolation is a big part of the addiction aspect, at least in America

The history of the phrase has no bearing on the current use of the phrase. Kind of like when Biden said “I am a zionist.” It meant something totally different when he was coming up than it does today.
The articles covered both historical and modern usage. Zionism is the same ideology as when it started, in fact that has become only more obvious since this genocide started.
I’ll quote from each article, including the two you linked, as they all support the reality that it is an emancipatory slogan.

Simply put, the majority of Palestinians who use this phrase do so because they believe that, in 10 short words, it sums up their personal ties, their national rights and their vision for the land they call Palestine. And while attempts to police the slogan’s use may come from a place of genuine concern, there is a risk that tarring the slogan as antisemitic – and therefore beyond the pale – taps into a longer history of attempts to silence Palestinian voices.
The use of the phrase “from the river to the sea” has come under particular scrutiny in the last three months. When Palestinians, or anyone on the left, has used the phrase to demand a free Palestine—as in the popular chant, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”—those on the right have disingenuously argued that it is calling for the death of all Jewish people in Israel.
In 2021, the Palestinian-American writer Yousef Munayyer argued that those who saw genocidal ambition in the phrase, or indeed an unambiguous desire for the destruction of Israel, did so due to their own Islamophobia.
It was instead, he argued, merely a way to express a desire for a state in which “Palestinians can live in their homeland as free and equal citizens, neither dominated by others nor dominating them”.
Preventing any possibility of a Palestinian state has always been Israel’s policy, one that the settlement building in the Occupied Territories is meant to ensure. This policy has been intensified under Benjamin Netanyahu, who in January 2024 publicly vowed to resist any attempt to create a Palestinian state and to maintain Israeli control from the river to the sea.

In Israel, Haaretz journalist Ravit Hecht wrote that the slogan is a call ‘for ethnic cleansing, similar to the one that took place in the Gaza ‘envelope’ [on October 7]… It’s not about a return to the 1967 borders or a cessation of the occupation, but the annihilation of the Jewish national home and the expulsion of Jews from this place.’"
Ravit Hecht is a zionist. Having a liberal leaning on a fascist ideology doesn’t make it any less fascist. It’s to the surprise of no one that zionist propaganda is deliberately used to de-legitimize the emancipatory slogan, used by the ones they oppress and ethnically cleanse, and project the mentality of genocide which Zionists are doing as we speak.

It’s not, nor are it’s origins. It’s a call for an end to the apartheid and creation of a democratic secular state in its stead, not the genocide of Israelis/Jewish people. Netanyahu’s use, calling for only Israeli sovereignty over historic Palestine, is completely different and a false equivalence.
It does, because of Zionism, not Judaism
Yeah, from my understanding China is only interested in it’s own self growth. While the Belt and Road initiative has certainly been beneficial for the global south, especially when compared to Neo-colonialism via the IMF and World Bank, it’s still ultimately for China’s sake. They have no interest in promoting Chinese style Communism to other countries, at least currently. Whether that will change or not I don’t know. Their current military aid towards the perpetuators of genocide in those conflicts is absolutely unacceptable.
What I want is an international organization where everyone has a vote and no one has a veto, where international law can actually be implemented instead of ignored. Where human rights violations documented by Amnesty International, HRW, Euro-Med Monitor, ect will be materially addressed by the global community regardless of who’s committing the violations. To that end, I oppose all Imperialism, Colonialism, and Neo-colonialism.

That’s State Department propaganda that’s been completely debunked for a while. The aims of US foreign policy on Afghanistan were lucrative financial exploitation and destabilizing the region.

It’s hard to predict how the US will respond globally as this empire free falls. Usually empires lash out violently as they wane, and with military bases around the world and an incompetent fascist in charge, I fear the US will too. Those military bases could quickly become considered an occupation by the many home countries if relations sour.
Multi-polar organizations like BRICS and regional multi-national organizations give me hope that China would not be a dominant force like the US is and European empires were. But only time will tell.
I do believe internationalism will be critical for global solidarity and a multi-polar world. If global capitalism is truly coming to a violent end in the near future, I can only hope that a socialist mode of production and mutualism will gain prominence in it’s place.
Whatever happens, I wish you and the Taiwanese people peace, whichever way they choose to go with, if the status quo becomes no longer an option

Yeah, hyperfocusing on the amount entirely misses the genocidal actions and intent. Even if the numbers weren’t accurate, that wouldn’t change anything (if anything, it’s a huge undercount)

IFJ White Paper on Global Journalism which goes into detail about journalists killed from 1990-2020. From that data the amount of journalists killed per year in a conflict is still highest in Gaza, with the Iraq War coming very close in 2006 and 2007.

The Jewish Supremacy inherent to Zionism goes back to race science, similar to White Supremacy. It comes from perceived ethnic superiority, abusing the religion to it’s own ends. Hasidic Jewish people, while small in number, are still the largest Anti-zionist group in Israel. Jewish people have been at the forefront of Anti-zionist activism for a long time, including Jewish Voice for Peace. Palestinians too of course.
Zionism uses Judaism as a shield, deflecting criticism against it’s fascist actions as anti-semitic, which in-turn raises the amount of genuine anti-semitism experienced by Jewish people worldwide, due to that false conflation of Judaism and Zionism. That’s why it’s critical to detangle that false conflation.

Zionism started as a fascist settler colonialist project and had the support of anti-semitic Christian Zionists throughout Europe. They even collaborated with Nazi Germany with the Haavara Agreement. Prominent Jewish people at the time, such as Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt warned of the fascist actions they witnessed of zionism in 1948. Of course the ethnic cleansing of the native Palestinian population goes back to the founders of zionism and started around the 1920s even before the Nakba.

As to why, fundamentally it’s due to supremacy and dehumanization. Zionism has dehumanized Palestinians since the start, and it’s been ongoing for generations. They see Palestinians as sub-human savages, and with that mentality it’s easy for them to legitimize all of the inhumane violence we see. This kind of dehumanization happened with the colonization of the Americas too, but since Zionism is only about a hundred of years, give or take, instead of the hundreds back in the 1500s-1700s, we are seeing it take place live with modern technology for the first time. Settler Colonialism needs to go. It has no place.
