Lemmy is populated by far left Americans who were banned from Reddit for extremism. Strict ideological conformity is required or you’ll get actual death threats. Don’t go there unless you want violent communist revolution and hate discussing interesting ideas.

It’s not my fault a lot of like-minded people also thought “Fuck Reddit”. If they want more liberal or conservative people on Lemmy they’re welcome as long as they follow the rules. Problem is that liberal or conservative people don’t really mind the stuff happening on Reddit, so why would they?

It’s not like right wingers have never fucked off and built their own “free speech” social media sites, with blackjack, and hookers.

Oh wait they do it all the fucking time. They’re just mad we figured out we can play their game too.

They’re also mad it makes it obvious that there are more of us than there are of them, since they get filtered into their own little defederated silos on Lemmy. They hate reality’s well-known liberal bias.

I always thought I was liberal. Why am I here? Maybe the labels have shifted around and I’ve held on to the same ideas?

I just find it weird when people group liberal and conservative in the same bucket. Labels are about as dangerous as parties, they muddy the discussion.

“Liberal” is not a useful word, imo. It means different things to different people. Hexbear users define it in the sense of neoliberalism, a historically right position. To many it means “progressive.” To others, it means “somewhere on the left, and I don’t care to put myself into a particular box.”

If we’d quit shitting on people who call themselves “liberal,” we might actually have a more cohesive coalition, rather than rejecting anyone for the tiniest perceived infraction, real or imagined.

Liberal, to me, is the opposite of authoritarian. No idea what other people consider it to be, but IMO it’s entirely disconnected from the left/right spectrum. You can have authoritarian left, right or center, same way with liberal.

Like in, “liberal democracy.” But consider what “the opposite of authoritarian” means in the context of financial policies. The predictable movements of money are punishing to those who don’t own capital in a self-perpetuating vicious cycle that ends with a few wealthy people and millions of people suffering poverty. A lack of regulation of finances results in total authority of capital. Neoliberalism seeks to reduce the authority of the state while increasing the authority of capital.

It is not just finances, a lack of regulation is a problem in a lot of areas because the naive capitalist idea that people will be able to vote with their wallets doesn’t work for 90% of product issues (anything you can’t see, anything you don’t purchase often, anything you can see but lack the expertise to judge, …).

Just because you don’t know what a word means does not make the word not useful. Just because ignorant people misuse the word does not make the word meaningless.

When politically illiterate people use the word liberal to mean “progressive” they are just showing their ignorance. Liberalism is “progressive” when compared to absolute monarchy but that’s not saying much.

Hexbear users most certainly do not mean “neoliberalism” when they say “liberal.” Don’t project your ignorance on other people. Hexbear is a politically literate community.

Instead of writing this horribly ignorant comment you should have just gone and looked up what Liberalism is. The definition is like 3 clicks away.

You don’t build a “cohesive coalition” by inviting anyone with any ideology. If people don’t share views any “coalition” will tear itself apart.

I think the problem with US politics is that liberal is by party design, grouped with the socialists too. Here in northern Europe, the liberal parties are usually considered our right to far-right parties, while conservatives are a bit more centrist and often without any influence.

That actually helps, at least with your post. All the more why I hate labels, when they totally flip around depending on the perspective of the person using them. This isn’t just a US/Europe thing, it’s true of history too. Hence the “Party of Lincoln” trope that Republicans like to wave around, ignoring that the party names shifted and flipped over time.

Socialists and other US extreme left ideas merge in with the Democrats because when they first materialized as political movements and a third party, thanks to our political system they either had to die out or pick a side to stay alive.

If you think genocide is bad, you’re a communist!

No shit though, the most rabid anti-communists literally thought like that. Like J. Edgar Hoover, the reichminister of the FBI straight up said shit in his book

“The Party (CPUSA) has operated hundreds of major fronts in practically every field of Party agitation: ‘peace,’ civil rights, protection of the foreign-born, support for (political) ‘victims,’ abolition of H-bomb tests, exploitation of nationality and minority groups.”

Literally saying if you were against shit like Jim crow segregation or having paid vacation days at your job you were literally taking your marching orders from the USSR.

That’s how out of touch with humanity they are. If you aren’t trying to inflict the maximum amount of human suffering with your every breath you’re their enemy.

I haven’t been banned from Reddit.

I want Lemmy to succeed because I want to interact more with people who are not from the U.S., and I don’t want to use platforms from the people who were sitting behind him on inauguration day.

Since Elon feels that he can interfere in Reddit and since Reddit seems open to letting that happen, that’s a good sign to me that I should limit my use of Reddit and should use alternatives instead. Lemmy seems to be the most Reddit-like of those alternative platforms, so here I am.

Nice cherrypicking. No, far left for adoring Stalin, deepthroating Russian propaganda and claiming Ukraine is full of Nazis and poor Russia had to react, claiming the Russian war they started in Ukraine is actually started by NATO, claiming that Russia and China are not imperialist countries and so on. Claiming that Russia and China support trans, gay and other minority people and the vile west doesn’t. Claiming that what’s happening to Uyghurs is made up.

There’s soooo much far left extremism here, way more than I ever encountered anywhere else. Maybe because I never wanted to be part of such a group. But I came with the group that disliked the Reddit api changes and Lemmy really looked like a (smaller and cozier) Reddit replacement at that time.

Most of the content from back then died out, but idiots (who would be among the first to be executed if their dream of regime change happened) cosplaying as leftists stayed.

“The very concept of “revolutionary violence” is somewhat falsely cast, since most of the violence comes from those who attempt to prevent reform, not from those struggling for reform. By focusing on the violent rebellions of the downtrodden, we overlook the much greater repressive force and violence utilized by the ruling oligarchs to maintain the status quo, including armed attacks against peaceful demonstrations, mass arrests, torture, destruction of opposition organizations, suppression of dissident publications, death squad assassinations, the extermination of whole villages, and the like.”

There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.

        You probably don’t count.

Lemmy had a mix of Marxists, full on Authoritarians who claim to be communists (tankies, Maoists, Stalinilists, many Leninists), Anarchists (ie. Libertarian Socialists), and a bunch of more centrist liberals (ie. social democrats, progressives, welfare capitalists).

I’m pretty sure the person is ranting about the first three groups, in particular probably the tankies as they tend to be the least polite and most self righteous.

As a Dane myself, whenever I see someone claiming to be Danish with takes like this, I feel like investigating, and what a curious account indeed. The account is a little over 5 weeks old, yet they’ve posted so incredibly much I doubt that’s their first account. They wrote in Danish a total of 6 times and it doesn’t look machine translated, so I believe they’re from Denmark, but I also found a post stating they “moved to Denmark”, not sure where from though, but they post all over the place, like /r/ukpolitics, /r/norway, /r/newzealand, /r/auckland, /r/australia, /r/jordanpeterson, /r/conservative and /r/republican to mention parts of the spectrum.
Interesting person indeed, clearly right wing, but why would they move to Denmark of all places?
